I know you’ve been on pins and needles waiting to hear about my mobile phone solution. So to reward you for being so patient, I’m going to give you a recipe for a killer Kir Royale (thanks Anna!). But first, the mobile phone solution:

1 – I’ve figured out a way to use my iPhone while sitting in a French café drinking a Kir Royale without being charged international roaming fees. The short version: keep airplane mode ON, cellular data roaming OFF and then switch Wi-Fi ON. Use skype for calls. (Go here if you want to learn more.)

2 – The VRBO house that I rented has a pay-as-you-go mobile phone. I just need to buy some minutes at the Tabac and I’ll be able to make local calls. Woo hoo! Now if I could only get up the nerve to make a local call… in French. Hmm… come to think of it, a Kir Royale might be helpful there too.

Recipe for Kir Royale – Pour 1 TBL of creme de cassis into the bottom of a champagne glass. Fill the glass with champagne. Add a spiral lemon peel to the glass. Turn your face towards the sun and enjoy.

p.s. I’ve been working on the Staying Connected part of my website. Do you have any favorite travel apps? Know of any useful apps with a focus on France? If so, please let me know!
