Oh friends, what a horribly grey and rainy January this is shaping up to be. Thank God for hot yoga, cold champagne and books. I’m currently reading The Cursing Mommy’s Book of Days. The fact that I think this book is hilarious and spot on, should give you an indication of my current state of mind. So why don’t we turn our attention to summer… beautiful, warm and sunny summer!

I get a lot of questions about summer camps in France. Yes, they exist! Each French city or commune has a wide range of day-camp options – ranging from arts to sports, circus camps to equestrian camps, and so on. The challenge, of course, is finding those camps online and then deciphering the descriptions and enrollment procedures.

Just like in the US, most associations won’t have their summer camp information online until spring. But you can get a good sense for what the region has to offer by looking at what activities they had last year.  In some cases you must be physically present to register, or call between certain times of day – so clearly, you have to be willing to wing it. We plan to choose a handful of our favorites and see what happens when we get there.

What I know for sure, is that it will be SUMMER and will probably be SUNNY.

Laurie: the first thing our girls did was attend a camp offered through the local Syndicat (like Parks and Recreation) department. These camps are less easy to find but the prices tend to be affordable and our girls had a blast!

Bonjour! I just found out your post and then I read your website in whole and that is very interesting for me to get your point of view about France. I’m French and I am also passionated by English speakers culture as well.
And YES in France there is summer camp of course! or you can have sport summer camp, or a thematic summer camp (one main activity : sailing, horseback riding, etc.).
As for me I believe in cultural and language exchanges I have open a summer camp for teenagers in the South of France, close to Perpignan. Kids are living in French all day long and they make new friends from all around Europe and more. For us a summer camp experience is first a warm atmosphere created by the team with the participants. At FIL, our camp, we aim to make every participant feeling comfortable in French and have fun! They enjoy a lot of sport activities like sailing, windsurfing, sea kayaking, mountain biking and a lot more, and fun and communicative French workshops.

    All the best
